Beliefs and Management of English in Japanese Intermarriage Families in East and Southeast Asia

This presentation examined how English is valued and managed in Japanese intermarriage families living in Taiwan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Using the framework of Family Language Policy, it explored how parents assign different meanings to English and translate those meanings into school choice, home language practices, and supplementary education. The presentation highlighted the importance of approaching English not only as a linguistic form, but also as a socially meaningful resource shaped within family life.
